The Toronto Blue Jays strengthened their starting rotation ahead of Monday’s MLB trade deadline by acquiring right-hander José Soriano from the Los Angeles Angels in exchange for three prospects, including highly regarded shortstop Arjun Nimmala. The Angels also received outfielder Eddie Micheletti Jr. and right-handed pitcher Angel Rivero, completing one of the day’s most significant pitching trades as Toronto continued its push to contend in the American League.

Soriano, 27, has emerged as one of the American League’s most effective starters this season, posting a 9-6 record with a 3.29 ERA in 22 starts while striking out 127 batters over 123 innings. Although he has issued a league-high 57 walks, the hard-throwing right-hander has consistently generated weak contact and ground balls, including dominant outings against Toronto earlier this year. Just as valuable to the Blue Jays is Soriano’s club control beyond this season, giving the organization a proven rotation piece for multiple years rather than a short-term rental.

To secure Soriano, Toronto parted with one of the top prospects in its farm system. Nimmala, a first-round pick in the 2023 MLB Draft, had developed into the club’s highest-rated prospect while advancing to Double-A. Micheletti, selected in the eighth round in 2024, was producing solid power numbers at Double-A, while Rivero, a 19-year-old signed out of Venezuela, had impressed with a strong ERA in rookie-level competition. The return gives the Angels three young players as they continue reshaping their organization around future talent.

The move underscores Toronto’s aggressive approach at the deadline despite paying a steep prospect price. Soriano had attracted interest from multiple contenders because of his breakout season, power arsenal and years of team control, making him one of the most coveted starting pitchers available. For the Blue Jays, the acquisition reinforces a rotation expected to play a pivotal role in the club’s postseason aspirations, while the Angels capitalize on Soriano’s increased value by adding a package headlined by one of baseball’s promising young infield prospects.
